Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Pope Francis’ envoy for peace in Ukraine, will meet on Tuesday (07.18.2023) with US President Joe Biden in Washington, where he is visiting until Wednesday, a few weeks after his trips to Kiev and Moscow.
Monsignor Zuppi’s visit “is part of the mission to promote peace in Ukraine and is intended to exchange ideas and opinions on the current tragic situation and support initiatives in the humanitarian field,” said a brief statement. of the Vatican without specifying its program.
On Tuesday, Zuppi will be received by Joe Biden “at the request of Pope Francis” and the two will discuss Russia’s “brutal war” against Ukraine, the White House announced Monday.
As part of his mission, Cardinal Zuppi, 67, had traveled to kyiv in early June, where he had met with President Volodimir Zelensky.
At the end of June, he traveled to Moscow, where he met with Maria Lvova Belova, the Russian commissioner for children, the subject of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for “illegal deportation” of Ukrainian minors, as well as with the Russian Orthodox Patriarch.
Pope Francis has called many times for peace in Ukraine and regularly prays for its victims.
