Mexico finds more than 300 migrants in truck boxes

In two events, the National Institute of Migration (INM) of Mexico identified this Sunday (07.16.2023) to 303 migrants who were transported in boxes of cargo trucks type Torton and a tractor-trailer.

The migrant groups rescued by the Mexican authorities said they originated from Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India and Nicaragua.

According to the Mexican government agency, a first arrest occurred on the Orizaba-Puebla highway, in the center of the country, during a verification operation. The driver of the vehicle was stopped Tortonwhich was accompanied by a white van.

“When reviewing the cargo box, 107 foreigners from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba and Nicaragua were located, who could not prove their regular stay in national territory,” the Institute explained. Among this group, 37 adults were found. , 20 unaccompanied girls and boys and 21 families made up of 50 more people.

The INM specified that the migrant children who lacked accompaniment and the identified family nuclei were channeled to the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF). Also, the Office of the Attorney for the Defense of Minors in Veracruz, in southern Mexico, was informed, while the adults were taken to immigration offices to carry out the corresponding procedures.

Meanwhile, proceedings were taken against the six people who were transporting the groups in the Torton truck and the custodians of the white van They were made available to the Attorney General’s Office, according to the entity.

In a second moment, the Mexican authorities detected an illegally parked tractor-trailer on a road near Fortín de las Flores. When it was inspected, 196 people who said they were foreigners were found inside, who also could not prove their regular stay in the country, the source said.

After the migratory inspection and corresponding count, the INM revealed that five adults were from Guatemala and another five from India. In addition, 19 were unaccompanied children and adolescents and the remaining 167 were made up of 70 family groups.

All these migrant groups were also channeled to the DIF, while the adults were taken to facilities of the Migration Institute. “In this case there were no detainees,” explained the INM, while indicating that the truck was made available to the Mexican authorities.
