European Commission: Disqualification of opponents in Venezuela "extremely worrying"

The European Commission discussed the disqualification of María Corina Machado and hopes that this Thursday there will be a sentence resolution. This occurs days before the summit of the European Union and Celac, in which Cuba and Venezuela have already denounced alleged opacity in the organization

On Wednesday, July 12, the European Commission once again reproached the disqualification imposed on the coordinator of Vente Venezuela, María Corina Machado, during a debate generated in the European Parliament.

Mairead McGuinness, Commissioner for Financial Services, stated that the political situation in Venezuela is “extremely worrying” how it is progressing and warned that “the humanitarian, social and political crisis continues now that the 2024 elections are approaching” with a decision that returns to undermine democracy and deepens the problems that are evident in the country.

McGuinness recalled that the Venezuelan authorities had already disbarred other Venezuelan opposition politicians such as former Governor Henrique Capriles.

Parliament will vote this Thursday on the resolution condemning the disqualification of Machado.

The discussion of the European Commission on the disqualification of María Corina Machado is recorded on the eve of the Summit of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to be held in Brussels next Monday and Tuesday, in which Apparently, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez will be sent, who is subject to a sanction that prevents her from entering the Schengen area.

Cuba and Venezuela denounced that there is an alleged opacity in the organization of the summit and that there would be alleged manipulation of the European Union in the preparation of this meeting.

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry sent a statement in recent days in which it rejects the “claim” of the EU to “minimize the role of sovereign States” of Celac in the meeting, as well as “the opacity with which it intends to carry out a series of parallel events without due coordination” with the Latin American nations.

The conclusions of these parallel events “could be instrumentalized to feed the agendas of political groups contrary to the objectives that summon us to this important meeting,” the letter continues.

In high-level meetings, in general, there are usually conversations on the sidelines of the main event where different topics are discussed.
