Colonia, Montevideo and Canelones are the Uruguayan departments that in recent years have registered the highest amount of exports from the country, and in 2022 they once again completed the podium.
Almost 56% of the country’s exports of goods originated in these three departments, according to the latest report on Exports of Goods by Department carried out by the Competitive Intelligence Management of Uruguay XXI.
Colonia has grown steadily in recent years and once again became the department with the highest exporter of goods in 2022. Last year it sold 23% of total export goods, mainly leveraged by industrial production within its free zones. The Montes del Plata pulp mill and the PepsiCo beverage concentrate plant are located in Colonia.
Almost 20% of the goods destined for export were produced in Montevideo. The Uruguayan capital concentrates most of the population and has the country’s main port, which allows it to play an important role as an exporter of industrialized goods. Canelones was the third in the list of exporters with almost 14.5% of the total placements, since it has a variety of export industries, many of them related to the transformation of agricultural products, although it is also a prominent exporter of pharmaceutical, dairy , plastics and wood.
To consider. Last year was a production record and average prices above the values of recent years. A combination of high prices and favorable harvests favored the growth of soybean exports. Exports of bovine meat and cellulose registered sales at higher prices, without increasing the volume exported.
