The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $70 million loan for sanitation and waste management in Montevideo, a project that must be approved by the Departmental Board.
However, in the face of repeated objections from the opposition, the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, called a meeting with all the political parties to “advance” the implementation of the BID program.
At that meeting and at the proposal of the Intendancy, a work commission was formed to prepare a “request for an extension to the IDB for the vote on this project,” Cosse reported.
“We have the option of requesting an extension, doing it seriously. Uruguay has a history and prestige in the link with multinational organizations, as well as the Municipality of Montevideo”, remarked the departmental hierarch.
He added that if faced with a loan, which has already been approved by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and by the IDB, the Intendancy requests an extension, it must have a “serious basis.”
“That is why we installed this work commission, with immediate start of operations, to focus on the preparation of that foundation until Tuesday, February 15,” he added.

Cosse said that if there is something that cannot wait, it is sanitation works and waste management, recycling actions, classification and other modern techniques”.
He stressed that the project “supports the response of workers from the Municipality, and the active and real participation of the people.”
