After a recent visit made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Nicaraguan regime, Denis Moncada, to the Secretary of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterrez, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega has shown its side «cordial and friendly» to the organism.
On more than one occasion Ortega has attacked the UN and has accused it of responding to supposed imperial interests; when he has come out in defense of his allies such as Cuba and Venezuela or in response to reports from the organization on human rights in Nicaragua.
This time Nicaragua showed another face. He was kind and respectful in a special request: he asked the member countries to circulate a document where a million-dollar compensation is claimed from the United States, based on a 1986 International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling.

«The Secretary General received the note sent by the President (Daniel Ortega) in a very cordial manner and stated precisely that he is going to distribute it to all the Member States, the content that you have already read and that precisely expresses the position of our Government, of our State, our people, that the United States must comply with the sentence, with a legal obligation that the International Court of Justice ordered it to indemnify Nicaragua for the damages caused by the military and paramilitary forces against the Nicaraguan people, against our State, against our country»the Nicaraguan official referred to official media.
In practical terms, what the Nicaraguan regime is looking for is a payment of more than 17 billion dollars in «repair» of the damages caused by the North American nation, determined by the ICJ. Something that the United States has described as «an issue resolved» during the administration of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro.

During the 16 years of Sandinista governments in our country, and particularly since 2018, Nicaragua has not had a friendly or diplomatic position with the UN. On the contrary, it has increased the disqualifications and attacks from the highest political level. The same has happened with the Organization of American States (OAS).
For example, in November 2022, Daniel Ortega branded the United Nations as «a disaster that has served nothing more to commit horrendous crimes always in developing countries». He said this because the UN Group of Experts identified crimes against humanity committed against citizens.

Along these same lines, in March 2023, the Nicaraguan dictator again attacked the organization and said that it only served to «stimulate, back, support aggressions, invasions, terrorism against the peoples, blockades against the peoples and to insult, slander, condemn the heroic peoples who defend their dignity like the Venezuelan people, like the Cuban people, like the Nicaraguan people, like the peoples of the world who are not willing to submit to the Yankee empire».
Beyond these attacks, what Nicaragua is looking for is a “refounding” of the United Nations to make it «more democratic»according to Foreign Minister Denis Moncada.
«The world is changing, the new international order is practically emerging, hegemonism is already in decline (…) the UN is a process that will gradually transform»he assured.
