Two babies die from influenza, MINSA calls for vaccination

The Epidemiological Surveillance System of the Ministry of Health reported today two new deaths from influenza, for which the general director of Public Health Melva Cruz called on the population to go to the facilities to be vaccinated.

The two deceased are minors, one one month old and the other one year old, from Darién and Bocas del Toro; Both children were treated at the Children’s Hospital.

Cruz reported that, of the 24 deaths from influenza, none had the vaccine; the highest percentage of deaths is occurring between the ages of 24 to 50 years.

“The behavior of the influenza virus is different, we expected that the vulnerable groups would be those under 5 years of age and the elderly,” said Cruz.

Cruz stated that it is important that people who have risk factors, young children, older adults and pregnant women, come to get vaccinated.

“Vaccines are effective and protect us against serious cases and even death,” Cruz said.

From Monday to Friday, the influenza vaccine is being administered in all health centers, police centers and Minsa-Capsi, from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The Minsa recommends that people who present respiratory systems not go to their workplace, children not to send them to school and go to health facilities to make an early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Maintain biosecurity measures such as hand washing, the use of masks in closed places.
