A large group of historians highlighted the struggle in the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaiboduring a special activity that took place at the Ingenio Bolívar Historical House Museum in San Mateo, Aragua state, organized by the entity’s History, Memory and Heritage Network, as part of the Bicentennial of the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo , which will be commemorated on July 24.
The event was attended by Alejandro López, president of the Simón Bolívar Studies Center (CESB); Nelly Guilarte, coordinator of the History, Memory and Heritage Network and director of the Museum; spokespersons for the Network; participants of the Life and Work of the Liberator Diploma; the Aragüeño Culture Cabinet and student spokespersons from the Master’s in History at the Rómulo Gallegos University.
In his conference, López indicated that the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo is a distinctive moment of our independence war, characterized mostly by land combat and that on this occasion, the fleets commanded by Admiral José Prudencio Padilla managed to defeat the Royalist boats that supported Fernando VII, commanded by Ángel Laborde.
He stressed that it is a fundamental milestone in the liberation of the American continent, considering that it was decisive in achieving victory in the Battle of Ayacucho on December 9, 1824 and later, American independence.
