The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, showed through social networks his disagreement with the decision taken by the Comptroller General of the Republic to ratify the political disqualification of the candidate for the opposition primaries, María Corina Machado.
In a response to a question made by the journalist Sebastián Nohra, the Colombian president expressed that the administrative authorities should not take away the political rights of citizens.

Petro’s response becomes relevant considering that the ties between Colombia and Venezuela have strengthened since Petro replaced Iván Duque as president. Since then, relations between the two countries have recovered and the Colombian ruler has shown himself to be an ally of Chavismo in the region.
In this way, Petro joined a huge list of political leaders inside and outside Venezuela who were against the disqualification of the national coordinator of Vente Venezuela.
For his part, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, also expressed his support for Machado. Through a releaselashed out at the Maduro administration, considering that it is an “arbitrary decision and contrary to the rule of law.”
“The decision is arbitrary and contrary to the rule of law. It violates elementary political and civil rights, including those stipulated in Article 23 of the American Convention on Human Rights regarding the right to elect and be elected,” the letter indicates.
The OAS General Secretariat reasoned that this measure responds to a strategy that seeks to liquidate the country’s democracy and deepen the crisis suffered by Venezuela.
“The regime resorts to disqualifications and proscriptions to cling to power and liquidate any semblance of democracy while deepening the political, social, humanitarian and economic crisis that the country is experiencing,” the document stressed.
