Authors of the Plastics Law call for compliance with the norm to be controlled: "The challenge of saving the planet is shared"

Senator Guido Girardi, president of the Future Challenges Commission, and Liesbeth Van Der Meer, director of Océana, authors of the Law that Prohibits the Delivery of Single-Use Plastics, called on citizens to enforce the regulations by denouncing the places that deliver disposable plastic products, such as cutlery, light bulbs, chopsticks, pens, etc. And they requested that the use of containers, made from said material, included in the second stage of the initiative, be stopped from now on.

The senator explained, this morning, that “the Future and Environment commissions of the Senate, together with Océana, elaborated this initiative that as of Sunday eliminates single-use plastics (light bulbs, services, plates, etc.) that are replaceable by vegetable or biodegradable plastics derived from wood by-products”.

The parliamentarian of the Party for Democracy, exposed in a meeting by Zoom, that “plastic is destroying our lives, they are endocrine disruptors that simulate being a hormone and cause false stimuli that produce various alterations and cancers. It also decreases the fertility of all living beings and humans. Millions of tons, gigantic amounts that become true islands, are falling into the sea and it is a planetary challenge because they are made from fossil fuels, that is, they pollute twice”.

For this reason, he asked “citizens to enforce the law and denounce those places where it is not respected either on the premises or as a delivery, because the challenge of saving the planet is shared between the responsibility of the State, through public policies like this, but also of the citizens to make them respect each other”.

He added that “another important aspect of this law is that it will require that all stores that sell soft drinks must have returnable containers. And in the future, disposable packaging will have an increasing component of collected and recycled plastics and must be certified. By 2025, 15% to reach 70% by 2060”.

For her part, the director of Océana, Liesbeth Van Der Meer, stated that “the life of the planet cannot depend on others, but on us and therefore we must be the main inspectors so that the law is complied with.”

He also clarified that “this law that addresses the serious problem that means that 75% of the waste that reaches the sea is single-use plastic and that can be completely replaced” was delayed for almost two years.

“This law is gradual so that businesses have time to adapt, but as of Sunday light bulbs, plates, services, chopsticks and the plumavit will be completely excluded. By 2023 all warehouses must have returnable containers and by 2024 all delibery must use non-plastic containers,” Van Der Meer pointed out.
