Defenders: OAS has heard complaints about human rights violations

Human rights defender Marcos Carmona arrives in Miami, after outlawing the CPDH

Human rights defenders celebrated that the Organization of American States, OAS, has not ignored the complaints they have made about the serious human rights violations perpetrated by the Daniel Ortega regime in Nicaragua.

«We have denounced and they have heard, and now in their resolutions they have not stopped putting their finger on the sore spot in terms of human rights»said Marcos Carmona, from the Permanent Commission on Human Rights, CPDH, one of the organizations that the dictatorship closed and confiscated its assets.

«The resolutions have been favorable to Nicaraguans and forceful in favor of Nicaragua, which leaves us satisfied as defenders of human rights»said Carmona, now in exile.

More than a year ago, in April 2022, Carmona, a lawyer and human rights defender, left Nicaragua secretly and between sidewalks. He first crossed into Costa Rica and then traveled to Miami, United States, where he is now. Carmona relates that it is hard to go into exile and even more so when you do it in adverse circumstances, without planning. «I left Managua for exile without a passport or documents»Carmona explains.

C.crimes against humanity

Human rights defender Juan Carlos Arce, from the Nicaragua Nunca Más Collective, said that they await a resolution in favor of the Nicaraguan people and their human rights.

Arce recalled that the Daniel Ortega regime weighs heavily on the presumption of crimes against humanity. «These crimes do not prescribe, therefore, they must not be forgotten, justice must prevail, the civilians, activists and peasants murdered during the Ortega dictatorship must not be forgotten»Arce remembered.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, IACHR, held the regime responsible for the death of 355 citizens murdered during the social uprising of April 2018.

The Ortega regime resigned from the OAS, however, it cannot disassociate itself from the organization until November of this year, so the resolution approved today concerns it, even if it ignores it.

The Organization of American States, OAS, held this week the fifty-third regular session of its General Assembly at its headquarters in Washington.
