The National Autonomous University of Mexico opens its headquarters in Cuba

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) strengthened the relationship it has with the University of Havana by inaugurating this Wednesday the Center for Mexican Studies in the Cuban capital. According to a release of UNAM, seeks to “promote cooperation and academic exchange in higher education on the Island, as well as with research institutes.”

Next week a new work model will begin, which will have as its starting point a colloquium on Caribbean studies, announced the academic authorities at the Center’s inauguration ceremony, which was attended by the rector of the University of Havana, Miriam Nicado, and his Mexican counterpart Enrique Graue.

The UNAM, which is ranked number one in Latin America, according to The Times Higher Education, with the new project seeks to intensify “the mobility of students and academics.”

Graue defended, in September of last year, the hiring of Cuban toilets. “We do have enough general practitioners,” he said, but “we have a large deficit in specialists, particularly in certain regions of the country. To deny that is to deny the obvious.”

Since the arrival in the Government of Mexico of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the relationship with Cuba has been strengthened. The president agreed with the Island to send 610 specialists in exchange for 1,177,300 euros per month that are delivered to the Cuban Medical Services Marketer. There are currently 700 doctors in Mexican territory and another 500 are expected to arrive.

Last week, the tanker Delsa left the Mexican port of Coatzacoalcos for Cuba with a cargo of 350,000 barrels of crude. The value was set between 18 and 20 million dollars, but it arrived on the Island as a donation. A source from Mexico’s state-owned Pemex told Reuters that López Obrador has been supplying oil to Havana, though he did not give details on the amount. On two previous occasions, Mexico sent fuel to the island in the tanker Bicentennial.

On the other hand, in December of last year, Mexico agreed to purchase 876,789 cubic meters of rajón stone for the Mayan Train, which will travel 1,500 kilometers between Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Two shipments were shipped, the ship melodywith almost 18,000 tons of porphyry stone, and the freighter gazibeywith 17,000 tons.

Of that cargo, only seven tons were unloaded in Puerto Morelos. Last March, a judge prohibited the landing due to the damage caused to the corals within the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve, an area established to protect marine ecosystems and preserve biological diversity.

The project has been a failure for the Government of Mexico, which already accumulates a debt of more than eight million dollars.

Likewise, the tuxpan bookstore of the Fondo de Cultura Económica de México opened its doors in El Vedado, Havana, in August of last year. Located at the corner of L and 27, it was the old Fernando Ortiz bookstore. This newspaper showed that the project at the time of its inauguration was unfinished, sloppy and poorly decorated. Despite this, it was opened with a ceremony attended by the Cuban Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, and the writer Paco Ignacio Taibo II, director of the Fund.

Regarding the educational collaboration between the two countries, there is evidence that, in 2017, the University of Havana and the UNAM extended the exchange in academic, scientific and cultural matters that they had agreed to for another five years. This agreement allowed them to generate collaborative projects and research.
