The Argentine Professional Soccer League was modified after the unanimous decision to remove an average decrease in the Extraordinary assembly held yesterday afternoon at the Lionel Andrés Messi estate.
Just six days before the end of the Argentine championship, the President of AFA, ‘Chiqui Tapia’, confirmed yesterday afternoon the modification of articles 90 and 91 of the statute. It is that, from now until 2028, only two teams will lose the category, instead of three.
The decision was unanimous, among 45 of the 46 assembly members present, in which only absent Workshops of Cordoba.
The two clubs that will lose the category will be the last in the average table, and the last in the annual table. If it were the same team, the second descended will be the penultimate in the annual table by points.
With the current numbers, the team benefited from this decision would be Institute of Cordoba, penultimate in the table of averages. And from the same table, who would lose the category would be Sarandi Arsenal. The descent by annual table of points would not be defined, so it would be done through a triangular between Velez, Banfield and Hurricane.
The reasons that support the Professional League to maintain 28 teams in First Division, are the post-consequences Qatar World Cup 2022which they defend, has generated higher income and a significant dose of international interest.
In the country itself, they label this change as “shameful” reaching the end of the definition of the competition.
The truth is that the relegation of three teams was devised with the intention of reducing the number of clubs in the League, after the modifications of the post-pandemic tournament, and that the current change was unanimously approved to avoid future alterations.
