Prior to the Census that will be carried out in Chile next year, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) is carrying out the precensus in all the country. This preliminary stage aims to carry out an initial count of homes and people, thus allowing adequate planning of the logistics for the official census and avoiding possible errors.
He precensus in Chile it began in March 2023 and will last until October of the same year. During this period, the number of households and people in various areas of the country will be calculated, in order to have the necessary personnel to carry out the complete census throughout Chile.
The Precensus is being carried out in the communes largest in each region, which will allow obtaining valuable information to prepare adequately for the 2024 Census. Some of the communes where the Pre-census is being applied are:
- Arica and Parinacota Region: Arica.
- Tarapacá Region: Iquique, Alto Hospicio, Pozo Almonte.
- Antofagasta Region: Antofagasta, Calama, Tocopilla.
- Atacama Region: Copiapó, Vallenar.
- Coquimbo Region: La Serena, Coquimbo.
- Valparaíso Region: Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, La Ligua, La Calera, San Antonio, Llay-Llay, Quilpué, Limache, Villa Alemana.
- Metropolitan Region: Santiago, Conchalí, El Bosque, Central Station, Huechuraba, Independencia, La Florida, La Pintana, La Reina, Las Condes, Lo Barnechea, Lo Prado, Macul, Maipú, Ñuñoa, Peñalolén, Providencia, Pudahuel, Quilicura, Quinta Normal, Recoleta, Renca, San Miguel, Vitacura, Puente Alto, Hill, Lampa, Tiltil, San Bernardo, Paine, San Pedro, Talagante, Peñaflor.
- O’Higgins Region: Rancagua, Machalí, Paredones.
- Maule Region: Talca, Constitución, Maule.
- Ñuble Region: Chillán, Ñiquén.
- Biobío Region: Concepción, Coronel, Chiguayante, San Pedro de la Paz, Talcahuano, Hualpén, Los Angeles.
- La Araucanía Region: Temuco, Carahue, Freire, Padre de las Casas, Pucón, Villarrica.
- Los Ríos Region: Valdivia, Río Bueno.
- Los Lagos Region: Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas.
- Aysen Region: Coyhaique.
- Magallanes Region: Punta Arenas.
The 2024 Census will be conducted over a twelve-week period, between March and May 2023 in all communes. Unlike the previous census, which was carried out in a single day, this time it seeks to avoid the problems experienced in the past and ensure a successful process.
It should be remembered that the Census was originally scheduled for 2022, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic and methodological difficulties, it was postponed until 2024. precensus in Chile is a fundamental step for the successful planning and execution of the 2024 Census.
