The Brazilian foreign relations secretary, María Laura de Rocha, dodged questions from Nicaraguan journalists who asked her about the proposed resolution presented by her country to the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), with which, according to analysts, Lula da Silva tries to “wash the image” of the Nicaraguan dictator.
The head of diplomacy of the Carioca country was approached by Nicaraguan journalists upon arrival at the OAS headquarters in Washington, where the 53rd General Assembly of the continental Organization begins today, and when asked about the “modifications” to the original resolution In which the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo is condemned, the head of the Brazilian delegation only said that the proposed resolutions “are drafts” that will be discussed.
“Secretary, what is the interest that Brazil has in making modifications to the Resolution on Nicaragua, which has caused a lot of controversy, (because) some consider that it is like softening…”, asked the special envoy of the newspaper La Prensa to the representative of Brazilian diplomacy, to which he evasively replied that, “the resolution is already in the process of discussion, it is not that it changed anything.”

De Rocha added that his country is “looking for a text that is interesting for everyone present.” They then asked him if Lula da Silva is Daniel Ortega’s friend and his response was to turn his back on the Nicaraguan reporters and leave.
During the 53rd OAS General Assembly, in which no official representation of Nicaragua participates, five countries presented a resolution proposal that seeks a condemnation of the Ortega dictatorship and perhaps a declaration of “illegitimate” for the questioned presidential votes of fraudulent, in which the Sandinista leader and his wife appointed themselves a new presidential term and for the human rights violations committed as of 2018.
However, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a friend of Ortega’s since the 1980s, presented an alternative resolution in which he seeks the OAS to establish that in Nicaragua there is democracy, the rule of law and that human rights are respected and that there is only than strengthen them.

Former Nicaraguan ambassador to the OAS, Arturo McFields, declared to Article 66 recently that the intention of the Brazilian president is to “wash the image” of Ortega and doing so seems like a legitimate government.
Opposition organizations, ex-residents and political exiles have spoken out criticizing Lula’s resolution proposal and have asked the representatives of the OAS member states to declare the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo as an “illegitimate government”.
The continental conclave will end next Friday, the day on which the resolution that wins the votes must be approved. What is worrisome, according to McFields, is that Lula could get the necessary votes to impose his proposed resolution in favor of the Nicaraguan dictatorship.
