Nicaraguan-Brazilian Camilo de Castro Belli protests Brazil's support for Ortega at the OAS

Journalist Camilo de Castro Bellithe son of a Nicaraguan mother and a Brazilian father, declared stateless by the Daniel Ortega regime, sent a letter to the Brazilian embassy in Costa Rica to reject the support that the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has given Ortega before the Organization of American States (OAS) prior to the 53rd General Assembly, where the issue of Nicaragua will be addressed.

Through the letter, addressed to the Brazilian ambassador in the neighboring country to the south, Antonio Alves Jr. The son of the poet Gioconda Belli —also declared stateless— protested against the proposed resolution presented to the OAS Permanent Council by the Government of Brazil, which qualifies as “supposed” the confiscation of his property and that of 300 exiled Nicaraguans.

He recalled that, like the Nicaraguan writer, the Ortega government included him in the recent measure “that revoked the nationality of 94 citizens of that country, which also implied the confiscation of my house, thus violating my human rights as a Nicaraguan citizen.” and as a Brazilian citizen.

At the same time, he stated that the confiscation of his assets is contrary to international standards, violating his human rights, “in addition to being a violation of the Nicaraguan Constitution, which in article 44 expressly prohibits confiscations, harming me in my dual status as Nicaraguan and Brazilian.

He also said that with this proposal, the Brazilian government “would be ignoring my rights and endorsing the arbitrary measure, in violation of human rights, promulgated by the Nicaraguan government.”

“I hope that the Government of Brazil, consistent with its concern about the increase in repression and violation of human rights in Nicaragua, rectifies its position in defense of the rights violated in my condition as a Brazilian citizen,” stressed the Nicaraguan filmmaker and activist. .

He also indicated that he hopes that the Lula administration “can contribute to Nicaragua recovering its freedoms and democratic rights, restoring to its citizens the full exercise of their citizenship, today kidnapped by the Daniel Ortega regime, which turns other expressions of citizenship into words.” empty».

Castro Belli’s position joins another of the 94 exiles who expressed their rejection of the Brazilian government for supporting the Ortega regime that continues to violate the rights of Nicaraguans and that rather opted to denounce the OAS Charter and leave the organism.
