More than 605,000 Nicaraguans have left their country due to the political crisis that began five years ago, a report by the Human Rights Collective revealed on Tuesday. Nicaragua Never Again. The countries that have been the main recipients of this migration are the United States and Costa Rica, the report indicates.
The organization, made up of Nicaraguan lawyers exiled in Costa Rica, explained that the countries that have traditionally been a destination for asylum seekers “have made their immigration policies more restrictive” and cite the Title 8, an immigration measure that penalizes irregular entry into the US across the border.
The lawyer Gonzalo Carrión told the voice of america that it is the “worst migratory exodus” in the history of Nicaragua.
The report stressed that during 2022 “there was a resounding increase” in the “forced” displacement of Nicaraguans, with 237.27% more than in 2021.
Braulio Abarca, also a member of the Human Rights Collective, indicated that most of the people who have left Nicaragua are young.
“It is a brain drain that we are seeing. Most of the people who emigrate are young,” he stressed.
