Through the most recent bulletin “Perspectivas 172” the Center for Transdisciplinary Studies of Central America (Cetcam) points out the “urgent” need for the unity of the Nicaraguan opposition to defeat the regime of Daniel Ortega.
In its analysis, Cetcam indicated that the demand for unity in Nicaragua has increased as a result of the release, on February 9, of 222 political prisoners “and their gradual incorporation into spaces for political participation.”

“Undoubtedly, the return to public life of those released from political prisons has instilled new hope in a good part of the population, and since before their release, different initiatives and efforts were underway in that direction,” the report detailed.
The center emphasized that the unity of the opposition forces in Nicaragua has been a challenge because “unfortunately several attempts have been made that have not been successful.”
Regarding the efforts to achieve unity in Nicaragua, the researchers stressed that the opposition must recognize “that all those who fight for political change and the end of the dictatorship are opponents, but not all can be considered consistent democrats.” .
For the Center for Transdisciplinary Studies, the groups or groups that can achieve unity in the country are “people with democratic values, respectful of differences and with an inclusive vocation.”

“These groups exist and it is true that they have differences that are sometimes perceived as profound, but during the last five years a good group has been building experience and political maturity,” the report stressed, without specifying who these groups are fighting for unit.
On the other hand, he recalled that the unity of the opposition forces in Nicaragua has been a demand since 2018, where several attempts have been made that have not been fruitful, “leaving bad tastes and mistrust in such a way that for some it is better not to talk about unity , but rather use other terms such as concertation, convergence, broad front, among others».
Added to the above, the body assessed that “some citizens” consider that without unity there will be no democratic transition; “Others warn that without it, it will not be possible to get support from the international community and it will not be possible to defeat Ortega.
After the social protests in 2018, the division of opposition groups was notorious, where they were never able to reach a consensus on true unity, which, for critics, was an opportunity for Ortega to intensify his repression, which continues to date, leaving more exile and political prisoners.
