Venezuela assumes UN vice presidency for Trade and Development

Venezuela was elected to the vice presidency of the Trade and Development Board of the Organization of United Nations (UNCTAD), a scenario in which it seeks to “provide solutions” and “diagnose inequities.”

This was reported on Twitter by the permanent representative of Venezuela to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Héctor Constant Rosales, noting that it is “an important space, where we will continue to evaluate how the evolution of trade in the world system is going.”

Constant Rosales recounted in a video released in his publication that the nation will diagnose “those inequities” and will try to “provide solutions from our Bolivarian peace diplomacy, always respecting multilateralism.”

In the letter, he added that Venezuela will seek “a sensible evaluation of world trade in favor of inclusive development and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Board of Trade and Development acts as governing body of UNCTAD between the quadrennial conferences. It meets in Geneva from June 19 to 28 in its annual session to oversee the organization’s activities.

Established in 1964, the board coordinates the integrated treatment of economic development and related issues in the trade, finance, technology, investment and sustainability sectors.

UNCTAD’s main objective is to maximize trade, investment and development opportunities for developing countries and to assist them in their efforts to participate in the world economy on an equitable basis.
