Mexico City, Mexico.- The young Cuban athlete Mitchell Onel Orellana Rodríguez, only 19 years old, decided to leave the Cuban shooting team in Spain, where he was at a training base.
The news confirmed it to Cuban newspapera source close to the island’s sports authorities.
The young athlete, a native of Sancti Spíritus, would have traveled to Spain to prepare for the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador 2023, in which he would represent Cuba along with 16 other sports shooting athletes. Orellana Rodríguez was one of three male competitors in the air rifle category along with Alexander Molerio and Rainier Quintanilla.
At the end of May the official site Hit He referred to the precarious training conditions for these athletes. “Despite the difficulties faced during the preparation, due to the lack of bullets and electronic systems, Cuban shooters do not give up getting on the Central Caribbean podium several times.”, they said at the time.
After Orellana’s decision, the record of Cuban athletes who have absconded from international events so far this year rises to 25, according to Francis Romero’s account. The renowned sports writer keeps a record of these events where he does not include athletes who have requested resignation or requested their retirement, nor those who have emigrated legally or illegally.
