On the eve of the 53rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held from June 21 to 23 in Washington DC, the Brazilian delegation came out in defense of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

In the note from the Permanent Mission of Brazil, the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva He presented his “observations” on the draft resolution of the human rights crisis in Nicaragua, presented by the delegations of Canada, Antigua and Barbuda, Chile, Costa Rica and the United States, where Ortega is demanded to stop the repression.

In the draft resolution proposal, shared on social networks by the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the continental organization, Arthur McFieldsthe Brazilian government crossed out the demands made to the Ortega administration.

Among the statements that Brazil omits and that it demands to be removed in the final resolution, it is where it is affirmed that the Ortega dictatorship is repressive and that it has arbitrarily imprisoned opponents.

Likewise, the Brazilian government denied that the repression orchestrated by the Ortega regime has caused the forced exile of thousands of Nicaraguans, for which the delegation of the South American country eliminated the indications in the resolution that affirm that the delegations are “aware that the worsening conditions —in Nicaragua— have caused hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguans to have left the country since 2018.”

The two resolutions adopted by the International Labor Conference (CIT), in which the violation of labor, union and business rights by the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship is criticized and demand the restitution of the illegalized business chambers and unions, constitute a “resounding defeat” against a disgraceful regime that violates human rights, commented analysts, businessmen and defenders of the rights of Nicaraguan workers.

For the economist, opposition leader and former politician, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo suffered a “resounding defeat” at the international level because the CIT, in which tripartite representations from all over the world participate “is unaware of the presence and the report of the Ortega delegation» and takes up complaints that had already been made in past meetings about abuses against workers, unions and employers.

After the repressive escalation by the Nicaraguan regime, 20 organizations that make up the Nicaragua Fight Coalition condemned these actions that have led to more arrests of opponents, religious, human rights defenders and journalists.

Regarding the exercise of journalism and freedom of expression in the country, the organizations affirm that there is multiple evidence that the profession of journalism and communication have been threatened, harassed, and prosecuted in court in recent years.

Through a resolution, this Thursday, June 15, the European Parliament requested the European Union to extend the sanctions against Nicaraguan judges and prosecutors and also include the dictator Daniel Ortega on that blacklist. Likewise, he demanded from the Sandinista administration a proof of life of Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, who has accumulated more than 300 days as a prisoner of the Nicaraguan regime.

“Ortega’s crimes should not go unpunished” say opponents, after a resolution by the European Parliament

“MEPs regret the continued instrumentalization of the judicial system and the complicity of judges with the regime. For this reason, they ask that the list of those sanctioned by the European Union be extended to judges and prosecutors, in addition to President Ortega himself and his circle closest to him, “reads the document issued by the Eurochamber.

The European Parliament also once again condemned the systematic and deliberate violations of human rights in Nicaragua, which constitute crimes against humanity. “The violations of human rights and the abuses perpetrated since April 2018 in Nicaragua are not an isolated phenomenon, but seek to dismantle the separation of powers and democratic guarantees and concentrate all power in the figures of the country’s president and vice president. “, he pointed.
