Montevideo, and a good part of the country, woke up this Friday with a intense haze which affected visibility at some points, according to the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) on its website.
This generated delays in several flights that were scheduled to depart from Carrasco Airport.
Some users on social networks took the opportunity to register some photos.
This was the example of Julio Medina, director of the Chair of Infectious Diseases, who from his workplace at the Hospital de Clínicas, showed how this meteorological phenomenon almost completely covered the city, but that only a piece of the Torre de los Homenajes can be observed.
The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology had forecast fog and mist banks for the entire country.
What is fog and how is it different from haze?
Fog is a “surface-based” cloud and occurs when suspended droplets in the atmosphere reduce horizontal surface visibility to less than 1,000 meters, Inumet reported.
In the mist, on the other hand, the suspension of the drops that reduces visibility allows it to be greater than 1000 meters.
Affected flights
CopaAirlines flight CM 283, which came from Panama City and was scheduled to leave its destination at 00:54, was delayed due to the weather situation in Uruguay. The scheduled departure date is at 20:43. Another Copa flight, which was scheduled to leave at 7.02 from its origin, will now do so at 11.10.
Meanwhile, one from Latam that departed at 06:25 from Lima was diverted, according to the Carrasco Airport on its website.
Aerolíneas Argentinas was also affected by this issue. A plane was scheduled to leave at 7:00 in the morning from Aeroparque, but it is delayed: it will leave at 8:55.
