On the eve of the 53rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held from June 21 to 23 in Washington DC, the Brazilian delegation came out in defense of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
In the note from the Permanent Mission of Brazil, the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva He presented his “observations” on the draft resolution of the human rights crisis in Nicaragua, presented by the delegations of Canada, Antigua and Barbuda, Chile, Costa Rica and the United States, where Ortega is demanded to stop the repression.

In the draft resolution proposal, shared on social networks by the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the continental organization, Arthur McFieldsthe Brazilian government crossed out the demands made to the Ortega administration.
Among the statements that Brazil omits and that it demands to be removed in the final resolution, it is where it is affirmed that the Ortega dictatorship is repressive and that it has arbitrarily imprisoned opponents.
Likewise, the Brazilian government denied that the repression orchestrated by the Ortega regime has caused the forced exile of thousands of Nicaraguans, for which the delegation of the South American country eliminated the indications in the resolution that affirm that the delegations are “aware that the worsening conditions —in Nicaragua— have caused hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguans to have left the country since 2018.”
Despite the innumerable complaints and convictions for human rights violations in Nicaragua, the Lula administration also does not agree that Ortega be ordered to cease violent actions against Nicaraguans.

For his part, the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the OAS, Arturo McFields, said that Brazil’s action is “shameful” after sending “a lying document in defense of Ortega by assuring that democracy does exist in Nicaragua and we just have to strengthen it and reiterate that the confiscations are supposed».
“Lula’s delegation, in the OAS, has just committed a shameful, disgusting and mocking act for thousands of people who have had to flee Nicaragua, hundreds who have been victims of persecution and more than 355 murders,” the former diplomat stressed. .
He also stressed that Brazil asks the OAS to eliminate the term “dictatorship” from Nicaragua in the resolution. “This is a very serious document because President Lula is lying (…) and he is telling another story about Nicaragua that never existed.”
McFields also said that it is unfortunate that the president of Brazil says that the theft that Ortega has made of dozens of opponents and non-profit organizations are supposed confiscations.

Since 2018, the OAS has demanded that the Government of Nicaragua respect human rights and cease the repression against Nicaraguans, which led the dictator Daniel Ortega to attack the organization, denouncing, on November 19, 2021, the Letter of the Organization, making the decision to leave, after describing it as meddling. Next November it will be two years for Nicaragua to officially leave the organization.
