She won two Oscars, was a Labor MP in the United Kingdom and the muse of one of Julio Cortázar’s stories.
British actress Glenda Jackson, who became an international star in the 1970s, has died at the age of 87, her agent said.
Jackson received the golden statuette for Women in Love (1969) and A Touch of Class (1973), in addition to being nominated on two other occasions. He also played Queen Elizabeth I in the critically acclaimed BBC drama “Elizabeth R.”.
Politics was always important to her, to the point that she gave up acting to join the House of Commons as a North London Labor MP from 1992 to 2015. She even served as Junior Transport Minister under the Tony Blair’s New Labor government.
The actress inspired the story of Julio Cortázar “We love Glenda so much”, about a group of moviegoers who are fans of actress Glenda Garson (based on Jackson). The story also gave its name to the homonymous book in which the story was included, published in 1980.
Coincidentally, that same year Jackson participated in the film “Hopscotch”, which translates to “hopscotch”something that Cortázar considered “a nice play of chance”.
Glenda Jackson returned to acting after her foray into politics. She played King Lear on stage in 2016, and won a Bafta for her return to the screen in the TV drama “Elizabeth Is Missing” in 2020.
In a statement released Thursday, her agent, Lionel Larner, said: “Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London, this morning after a brief illness. with his family by his side.”
According to Larner, the actress had just finished filming “The Great Escaper”, which she co-starred with Michael Caine. Together they had interpreted in 1975 “The romantic English”.
