The Attorney General of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, announced Tuesday that after his third visit to Venezuela, “important steps were taken, strengthening the basis for meaningful action under the Rome Statute.”
Karim Khan stated that he had the “pleasure” of signing a memorandum of understanding with Nicolás Maduro that will allow the establishment of a unit in the country of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, according to what was learned through a press release published in ICC web portal.
“This memorandum was concluded within the framework of the first memorandum of understanding that I signed with President Maduro on November 3, 2021 and followed our agreement on my second visit to Venezuela in March 2022 to proceed with the establishment of an office of the Prosecutor’s Office. ”, indicated the ICC prosecutor.
Khan asserted that with the memorandum they will be able to “increase the scale and impact of our field presence in Venezuela, broaden the national interface for our work, seek, identify and support significant efforts to improve national justice initiatives.”
He stressed that the signing of the memorandum allows “providing advice and assistance to the Venezuelan authorities” for legislative developments in the field of justice, the exchange of knowledge and best practices with national authorities.
Karim Khan explained in the ICC press release that he also met with the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez; the attorney general, Tarek William Saab and the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Gladys Gutiérrez, in addition to the resident coordinator of the United Nations in Venezuela, Gianluca Rampolla del Tindaro.
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is visiting the country for the third time and is received by the authorities.
