The IV conference The Nation and Emigration will be held in November

The Cuban government convened the IV conference The Nation and Emigration for November of this year, an appointment suspended in 2020 after the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Through Twitter, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stressed that the event, scheduled for November 18 and 19, is “an expression of the unequivocal will of the Cuban Government to continue deepening ties and dialogue with its nationals abroad” in ” defense of our sovereignty and for national development”.

Likewise, he recognized the “disinterested and permanent” support of Cubans residing abroad who managed the shipment of medical supplies during the most critical stage of the Covid-19 pandemic on the island.

Rodríguez Parrilla considered that the event will have a special meaning for young people, those who “identify, defend and love the country”, even though they were born in other latitudes.

According to International Organization for Migration (IOM), which is part of the United Nations system, in 2020 they lived outside of Cuba 1,757,300 people who were born on the Island. The United States Census Bureau, for its part, reported that in 2019 there were 1,359,990 people born in Cuba living in that country. About half a million of those Cubans who make their lives in other countries maintain their residence on the Island.

The relationship of the Cuban State and government with their emigration —strongly conditioned by the conflict between the governments of Cuba and the United States— has evolved over the years since the first Dialoguewatershed from which began a series of reforms aimed at normalize the relationship with emigration. The immigration reform which entered into force in 2013 brought with it the most important changes in this regard in recent years; However, the speed and depth of the measures that have to do with Cuban emigration have not been enough, especially if we take into account the role that this can play in the socioeconomic development of the country and the spirit of the new constitution approved in 2019.
