Fernando Pereira: "The coalition used the issue of insecurity as an electoral battle horse"

The president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, believes that the government used the security discourse as an issue for electoral gain, and described as a “failure” the current strategy carried out by the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, who inherited the baton after the death of Jorge Larrañaga.

“The coalition used the issue of insecurity as a workhorse in the search for electoral gains. It is a matter of the first order, we all have to contribute and collaborate, but with more effective policies”, said the leftist leader.

And he added that “crimes fell due to the pandemic and it was not the LUC or the police command, which is headless.”

And he finished: “This government entered with a tonic of yelling at the Police thinking that it was the way to solve the problems.”

The FA cannot be considered victorious

On another issue, Fernando Pereira remarked that “without a doubt, no one can affirm and it would be a huge mistake to think that the Broad Front has won the elections.”

Regarding the upcoming electoral race, Pereira maintains that the FA cannot take for granted that the fact that the public has a bad perception of the government’s strategy translates “automatically into adherence to the Broad Front.”

A recent study carried out by Opción Consultores has revealed interesting data on the intention of citizens to vote for the next general elections in 2024. According to the results obtained, the Frente Amplio (FA) leads with a 3% advantage over the Coalition Multicolored.

When asking those surveyed which political party they would choose if the elections were held tomorrow, it was found that 42% of those consulted would opt for the FA. For their part, 30% stated that they would vote for the National Party (PN), while 4% would lean towards the Colorado Party (PC), another 4% towards Cabildo Abierto (CA), and 1% towards the Independent (PI). These data add up to a total of 39% of the intentions in favor of the government coalition.

Likewise, other opposition political forces, such as the Intransigent Radical Ecologist Party (PERI), obtained a 1% vote intention, while the remaining 1% is distributed among the other parties. On the other hand, undecided voters reached 11%, while 6% expressed their intention to vote annulled or blank.

The numbers just mentioned show a certain correlation with those obtained by the consultant in May of last year, when the FA had a voting intention of 41%, like the Multicolor Coalition. Both games were in a virtual tie. However, the data varies slightly compared to the May 2021 scenario, when the Multicolor Coalition led with 43% of voting intentions compared to 34% for the FA.
