The Public Ministry intends to work with the office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and take advantage of both its technical assistance and advice, according to prosecutor Tarek William Saab. Experts anticipate that the presence of the organization in Venezuela will allow obtaining first-hand information that will serve as input for the investigation that is being carried out against the State for crimes against humanity.
Barely 40 hours after the signing of a memorandum of understanding in which the installation of the office of the International Criminal Court (CPI) in the country, the attorney general, Tarek William Saab, stresses that Venezuela can do justice without the presence of any international organization.
In an interview with Venevisionthe official imposed by the extinct constituent assembly argued that Venezuela has tried to demonstrate that it has the capacity to do justice without help before the Chamber of Preliminary Questions of the ICC, before an investigation that is ongoing against the State for the commission of crimes of It hurts humanity.
“We have the clear intention of doing justice in our country without a transnational entity doing it for us and we are demonstrating it. That is what the appeals presented by Venezuela before the Preliminary Questions Chamber have consisted of, “he said.
In this sense, he clarified that the ICC would not install its office in Venezuela to compete with the functions of the Public Ministry, but would help the national instances to improve their capacities, working together and offering technical assistance.
«It will serve for inter-institutional unity, as well as for cooperation and technical assistance. It is an office for training, technical advice and inter-institutional unity », he insisted.
Saab announced that he and his team visited the premises where the office will be installed, a step that, he assured, will allow greater collaboration “to guarantee that there is more justice” in Venezuela, where in March 2022 they had already committed themselves, in a way verbally, to open this office.
During the last two years, the Public Ministry has made efforts to escape the focus of the ICC investigation, making reforms in the Venezuelan judicial and penitentiary system, but its arguments have been dismissed by the international organization and the investigation continues its course.
In April of this year, Venezuela accused Khan of “instrumentalizing” Justice “for political purposes”, after the publication of a document in which the ICC Prosecutor dismissed the arguments presented by the Maduro government regarding the investigation. .
According to the lawyer and director of Access to Justice, Ali Daniels, this memorandum of understanding does not compromise the investigation in any way against Venezuela for crimes against humanity, and that this outreach to the country will allow Khan’s office to understand the reality of Venezuela firsthand.
“It will never ever be the same for an official to be told what is happening in Venezuela than for him to see it. This is essential for the Prosecutor’s Office because even if they do not collect information that has weight in the investigation, they will know how life is lived in Venezuela (…) Although the Prosecutor’s Office will be giving technical training courses, they will be able to see first-hand how the judicial system,” Daniels explained.
