Face to face

Face to face

The political bullying this time was merciless with the departmental assembly member of the MAS Muriel Cruz. Outraged by the brutality with which she was attacked, outraged by the cowardly actions of the educated mobs and the circus that the democratic exercise has become, outraged by the equally brutal repression by the Police by which other people were hurt. What happened on Friday in the vicinity of the Governor’s Office is the sad corollary of the political polarization that the country has experienced for years.

The episode began with the controversial appointment of two new indigenous assembly members, followed by a call, through social networks, for a “peaceful takeover of the Governorate”, apparently to avoid the possession of these representatives. Propitious scenario for violence to emerge. Troubled river for fishermen of political revenues. Everything was an announced act, whose outcome could have been avoided, but it was not done or was not wanted.

It is urgent to break the vicious circle of polarization policy. We must stop adding fuel to the fire with hasty accusations from one side or the other, with conspiracy theories that border on the ridiculous, with political intolerance that hurts people’s sensibilities. You have to put aside the ‘anything goes’ to discredit your opponents. At some point, that minimum of sanity and democratic spirit that makes peaceful coexistence possible between different forces has to be recovered. What is happening now does not lead to anything good. It is urgent to change course before it is too late.
