The brutal murder of a woman in Havana brings to 38 the number of femicides that have occurred this year

Anisleysi Rodríguez Mederos, known as Anita and 34 years old, is the most recent victim of femicide in Cuba. With her violent murder last Wednesday night, there are 38 women who have died as a result of sexist violence on the island, according to reported the platform I Yes I Believe in Cuba (YSTC).

The organization classifies the crime against Rodríguez as a social femicide “due to the brutality suffered”, although it continues to investigate to obtain more information. According to reports compiled by 14ymediothe house of the young woman, resident in Palatino, in the Havana municipality of Cerro, was assaulted by several men and during the robbery they brutally murdered the young woman.

Rodríguez lived alone, in a house located near an office of Aguas de La Habana.

Only in the last week five femicides were reported, one of which occurred on May 30 but the case was confirmed until June 7. YSTC acknowledged that it continues to work on the verifications in these “numerous reports”, although it maintains that, to date, there have been 38 violent deaths and two sexist assassination attempts.

The number of victims exceeds the 34 reported by independent organizations and media in all of 2022. Only last February there were 11 deaths, at least seven in May and four in the first week of June.

YSTC acknowledged that it continues to work on the verifications in these “numerous reports”, although it maintains that, to date, there have been 38 violent deaths and two assassination attempts.

The latest confirmed victims correspond to Milsa, in Granma, and María Cristina Rodríguez Rodríguez, in Santiago de Cuba. Milsa was murdered by her ex-partner, with whom she had separated due to domestic violence and had filed a complaint with the Police, while Rodríguez’s body was abandoned near her home. His relatives had also warned the authorities about his disappearance.

While independent organizations ask the Cuban government to declare a state of emergency due to the increase in violence, the Presidency launched this Thursday the Cuban Observatory on Gender Equality in another event of congratulations for “this endeavor”. The new institution will be in charge of compiling, processing and visualizing indicators related “to the situation and position of men and women”, from a gender perspective, said the official press.

According to this Observatory, 18 women were murdered in Cuba in 2022 for reasons of gender, almost half of the independent records, although the official press explained that the data corresponds to “judicial processes resolved in the courts.”

During the launch, President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the Observatory as an “essential, important and comprehensive tool”, which will allow the collection of statistics that “cannot be cold”.

In May, the Supreme People’s Court of Cuba assured that the sentences for the murderers of women exceed 25 years in prison and that the defendants are in an age range of 20 to 44 years.
