the tech giant Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) is creating a social network to compete with Twitter and he has the idea of launching it “as soon as he can”, according to the specialized media The Verge.
In an internal meeting, Meta product manager Chris Cox called the new platform, which Meta has been working on since January, its “answer to Twitter” and said it will use Instagram’s account system to auto-complete the information of a user.
“Creators and public figures are interested in having a platform that is managed sensibly, that they can trust,” Cox said, which is interpreted as an allusion to the lack of trust that users and companies have in Twitter since that Elon Musk bought the app last year.
Cox also stressed that the app will be based on “security (and) being easy to use and reliable.”
The internal name of the social network is “Project 92”and its public name could be “Threads” (threads, in English), according to internal documents obtained by The Verge.
The new standalone app will be based on Instagram and, according to photos posted by the outlet, will look very similar to Instagram’s comment section, albeit with the option to republish other users’ posts, akin to retweeting.
The app will integrate with ActivityPub, the open source decentralized social networking protocol, which will allow users of the new app to bring their accounts and followers to other apps, such as Mastodon.
Cox said some celebrities have already pledged to use the app, and he named DJ Slime. In addition, the executive said that he was in talks with Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama.
