Dollar rises to R$5.24, after US inflation data

Dollar goes to R$ 5.67 and closes at the highest value in more than six months

One day after reaching the lowest value in five months, the dollar closed slightly higher, after the release of data on inflation in the United States. The stock market rose for the third day in a row, driven by the performance of companies exporting commodities (primary goods with international quotations).

The commercial dollar closed this Thursday (10) sold at R$ 5.242, with an appreciation of 0.28%. The price started the day down, dropping to R$ 5.17 at the lowest of the day, around 12:40. The coin, however, reversed the movement and rallied in the closing hours of trading.

Even with today’s high, the dollar retreated 1.51% in the week. The currency accumulates a fall of 1.21% in February and 5.99% in 2022.

In the stock market, the day was marked by gains. The B3 Ibovespa index closed at 113,368 points, up 0.81%. The performance was driven by mining companies, mainly after the release of data showing an increase in production and sales by Petrobras, whose shares are the most traded on the stock exchange.

The dollar had a high day across the planet, after the announcement that consumer inflation in the United States reached 0.6% in January, the same level observed in December. The number came above investors’ expectations and indicates that the Federal Reserve (Fed, US Central Bank) may increase interest rates in the largest economy on the planet more strongly than expected.

Higher rates in advanced economies encourage capital outflows from emerging countries. The rise in Brazil, however, is being limited after the Central Bank raised the Selic rate (basic interest rates) to 10.75% per year at the last meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee. Brazilian interest rates returned to double digits for the first time in five years.
