Chirican rice farmers lift the strike, the Government agrees to pay them $16.8 million

After reaching several agreements with the government, the Chiriquí rice and bean producers lifted the road closures and other protests in the region.

The producers maintained protests for three days on the Inter-American highway and mobilized their large agricultural machinery.

With the closure of the International road this Wednesday and the protests this Thursday, they demanded the payment of several million dollars in compensation.

Gabriel Araúz, president of the New Association of Rice Promoters of Chiriquí and spokesman for the group of producers, pointed out that one of the Government’s commitments is to make payments of debts and incentives in the amount of $16.8 million before April 15, only of the rice category.

The agreement with the producers was signed by the Deputy Minister of Agricultural Development, Carlos G. Rognoni.

With this agreement, the authorities promised that next Tuesday, February 15, they would convene a meeting between the regional director of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, the Agricultural Marketing Institute (IMA) of Chiriquí, and the members of the three associations of bean producers. .

The objective of this meeting is to coordinate the purchase of 20,000 quintals of chiricano beans through the IMA.

The document highlighted that next Thursday, February 17, the deputy minister will be present at a meeting with the associations of rice producers to follow up on the commitments made.
