OAS Permanent Council will host a new report of the Working Group on Nicaragua

Member states ask the OAS to include the political crisis in Nicaragua in its General Assembly

The Organization of American States (OAS) reported that this coming Wednesday, June 7, the Working Group on Nicaragua will deliver to the Permanent Council a report on the crisis that the Central American country has been experiencing since April 2018.

Through a statement, the entity explained that the OAS Permanent Council will hold a regular session on June 7, at 10:00 a.m., local Washington DC time.

In August 2018, the OAS approved the Working Group on Nicaragua with the objective of “contributing to the search for peaceful and sustainable solutions to the situation in Nicaragua, including through consultations with the Government” of Daniel Ortega.

The Commission also has the mandate to contribute “to the process of national dialogue in Nicaragua, including support, accompaniment and verification measures in coordination with the ongoing efforts of the Organization, SICA (Central American Integration System) and other regional and international”.

The Working Group on Nicaragua, to follow up on the political crisis facing the country, is made up of Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.

Since 2018, the OAS has demanded that the Ortega regime respect human rights and cease the repression against Nicaraguans, which led Ortega to attack the organization, denouncing, on November 19, 2021, the Organization’s letter and made the decision to leave, after describing it as meddling.

Despite the fact that in six months it will be two years for Nicaragua to officially be left out of the OAS, member countries of the organization and the international community continue to demand that the Nicaraguan dictatorship be pressured to stop the harassment against Nicaraguans.
