Takeover of the Catholic school of San Sebastián de Yalí was like an armed assault and at dawn

Takeover of the Catholic school of San Sebastián de Yalí was like an armed assault and at dawn

It was in the early hours of the morning. Police and armed civilians took over the facilities of the Santa Luisa de Marillac Catholic school. The nuns who administer it experienced moments of terror. In addition, community members heard the movement of vehicles in which the repressors who arrived at the study center were traveling.

The school, located in San Sebastián de Yalí, is administered by the Daughters of Santa Luisa de Marillac, who have been evangelizing for three decades in the communities of this municipality of Jinotega.

The community members explained that in the early hours of this Tuesday, police officers and paramilitaries took over the school and the convent of the Daughters of Saint Louise de Marillac.

«It was at dawn, they arrived at the school, some entered and others surrounded the place. In minutes they had everything surrounded, “said a mother who has her children in the religious education center.

“Since that moment, no one has left their home for fear of the uniformed officers. There is a lot of fear. We understand that they took a nun or two, there is still a lot of confusion,” added the community member.

expelled nuns

The fear of the community members was not unfounded. The regime of Daniel Ortega expelled three nuns from the Hijas de Santa Luisa de Marillac congregation.

The residents said that among the nuns that the Police took away, there was Sister Janet, who is the superior of that Catholic congregation.

“The Sandinista regime ordered the expulsion of three nuns from the Hijas de Santa Luisa de Marillac congregation, another abuse,” denounced researcher Martha Patricia Molina, who has recorded the regime’s systematic attacks against the Nicaraguan Catholic Church.

“Sister Janet, who is the superior, is sick, but that did not matter to the Sandinistas,” said another concerned community member.

Another citizen confirmed that as he passed by on his motorcycle he was able to see police and paramilitaries. «I felt very afraid and I moved away quickly from there. I don’t know what will happen to the nuns, or to the school, but it affects everyone,” he lamented.

For this report, the authorities of the Catholic Church of Jinotega were consulted this Tuesday, who expressed that “they handle little information on the subject.” “We are going to wait, we don’t know what happens,” said a religious from the department.

Uncertainty in the community

Until the closing of this article, both police and paramilitaries remained in the facilities of the Catholic school and the convent of the sisters of Santa Luisa de Marillac.

This would be the most recent onslaught by the Ortega y Murillo regime in its attempts to silence the voice of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. While the community, especially those who have children studying at the educational center, said “live hours of uncertainty.”
