The International Criminal Court (ICC), located in The Hague, the Netherlands, confirmed having received the complaint from the investigation commission of the Brazilian Senate that accuses President Jair Bolsonaro of crimes against humanity during the pandemic.
Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, vice president of the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI), announced the news through his Twitter account. “Our work continues, we will not rest until Justice is done!” he wrote.
The complaint is based on the final report of the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI) that analyzed Bolsonaro’s management of the pandemic. During six months of work, the commission listened to more than 60 people.
The CFI must now decide whether or not to proceed with the investigations.
nine felonies
The ICC asked Bolsonaro to be charged with nine crimes: “epidemic resulting in death; infringement of preventive health measures; irregular use of public funds; incitement to crime; falsification of private documents; quackery; crime of prevarication; crime against humanity and crime of responsibility”.
In addition, the commission considered that Bolsonaro’s negligence, incompetence and anti-scientific denialism would have been the cause of the “stratospheric” mortality of the epidemic in Brazil.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 635,000 people have died and nearly 27 million have been infected in this country due to covid-19.
The ICC has jurisdiction over crimes of international scope, such as genocide, war crimes or crimes against humanity, of which the Brazilian president was accused.
