Release of files of the dictatorship

Javier García defends her to know the “total truth, without editions”

The Minister of National Defense, Javier García, defended this Friday the decision to make public through a bill all available information related to the recent past, through the creation of a special section in the General Archive of the Nation ( AGN) which will be in charge of gathering, organizing and preserving all this documentation.

“It is necessary for the knowledge of the total truth, without intermediaries or editions, and without anyone saying what can be read and what not,” he said. Consulted this Friday on the Desayunos Informales program (Channel 12), García maintained that the resistance and “nervousness” in certain sectors before the release of this information is “notorious”.

The minister’s statements responded to a certain political counterpoint that he has been maintaining with the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, who days before had assured that making these files public could violate the privacy of the victims of State terrorism.

“It’s a delicate thing,” Pereira had told Telemundo last Saturday, to participate in the March of Silence. “The archives have issues you have to be careful about,” he noted. “Above all they have personal information from those who were victims of state terrorism. Victims of state terrorism must be cared for, not exposed. Giving this material to Justice, at the same time you have to take care of those who were victims and can be revictimized again, “said the opposition headline.

García, for his part, brought up this Friday a resolution issued in 2011 by the AGN Secretariat that ordered the reservation of 153 files with information related to that time. According to what he said, there are reports corresponding to various faculties of the University of the Republic, actions of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (ESMACO) of the Armed Forces, “files” of the Anti-subversive Activities Coordinating Body (OCOA), daily reports of the General Directorate of Intelligence and documentation corresponding to informants and “buchones”. Nothing linked, he said, to torture or interrogation of victims of State terrorism.

The government’s decision was viewed positively, although with some skepticism, by the Mothers and Relatives of the Detained-Disappeared. Days ago, at the end of a new edition of the March of Silence, one of the referents of that organization, Ignacio Errandonea, considered it a positive step, but claimed that new information should appear there. “We know and we have documented that it exists more than twice as long as we know it,” he said in a note with Telemundo. “The president and the minister must demand that the Armed Forces hand over all the files,” he claimed.

The declared objective of the government is that these archives, which until now have been accessible to a small group of people, such as journalists, historians and the Justice, are available to whoever requires it, without limitations.
