Cuba registers 243 deaths from traffic accidents in four months of 2023

The National Road Safety Commission reported this Wednesday that in the first four months of 2023 there have been more than 3,000 traffic accidents in Cuba, with a balance of 243 deaths and more than 2,300 injuries.

Among the main causes they point out “violation of the right of way, failure to control the vehicle, technical defects, speeding and driving under the ingestion of alcoholic beverages”, assured the entity to Cuban News Agency (ACN).

The provinces that reported an increase in deaths were Cienfuegos, Havana and Holguín.

The accidents that occurred up to April represent 30% of the total number of accidents in 2022 (9,848), while the deaths from road accidents in the first four months of the year are 35% of those that were registered last year (700), it specifies. efe.

Sunday continues to be the deadliest day with one death for every eight registered accidents, the Commission said.

Almost all of them occur due to the collision of moving vehicles and the “unfavorable” conditions of the road.

The National Road Safety Commission points out that in April indicators such as collisions 688 (-98), deaths 51 (-5) and injuries 535 (-60) decreased and that Cienfuegos, Artemisa and Holguín were the only territories that increased the number of events .

In addition to the aforementioned causes, road accidents are influenced by the poor condition of the roads and the country’s aging vehicle fleet, where cars that are more than 60 years old travel.
