The negotiating delegation of the National Liberation Army (ELN) affirmed this Tuesday, May 23, that it “continues working” to reach a bilateral ceasefire, after impasses due to statements by President Gustavo Petro.
The Colombian guerrilla pointed out, in its Twitter accountthat achieving that objective, one of the items on the agenda of the current cycle of talks, would make possible “the development of the Mexico Agreement.”
“A ceasefire requires a deep exercise of discussion, analysis and agreement that allows an effective and feasible design,” added the ELN.

Said document signed in Mexico includes the road map of this new attempt to bring positions between the two parties closer and reach a definitive peace agreement for Colombia.

Both parties resumed the current peace talks after the “pause” requested by the guerrillas last week for statements by Petro about the criminal activities that support irregular armed groups.
The delegations reported that they were making this decision “after having made an initial exchange of clarifications” and after reaffirming “the political nature” of the dialogue table and of the ELN “as a rebel armed organization.”
