Elías Sayegh: The Minec is the one who gives permission to move a protected tree like the saman

Elías Sayegh, mayor of El Hatillo, clarified that the saman is a protected species and that he does not have jurisdiction to move or prune it; this in reference to the controversy caused by the transfer of the tree that was at the entrance of El Cigarral to a nearby park by the owners of the construction where it was located and the Ministry of Ecosocialism (Minec)

The mayor of the El Hatillo municipality, Elías Sayegh, warned this Monday, May 22, that it was the Ministry of Ecosocialism (Minec) that authorized the transfer of the saman located in El Cigarral, specifically on a piece of land where a construction is being built —which according to the neighbors is a Traki—, to a park within the same urbanization at the request of the neighborhood association.

In an interview granted to wave circuitSayegh explained that the Environment instance denied the transfer of the saman to another place because it is a protected species, for which he stressed that El Hatillo does not have jurisdiction to allow that, as he said in his statement.

He indicated that then, the owners of the construction went to the Minec to ask to move the tree and they were granted the pertinent permits to do so with the due controls from the Ecosocialismo portfolio, the neighborhood watch; of independent engineers who were attentive to the process and with the accompaniment of the Public ministry.

Sayegh said that the experts commented that the saman has a 90% chance in its new habitat and reiterated what was said in the statement: that the tree was “sick” from Guatapajarito, a parasitic plant that kills trees, and that is why it was made a pruning to the plant species.

In this sense, he explained that there are protected species of trees that are not under the jurisdiction of El Hatillo, such as samanes, cedars or araguaneyes; while others do. He clarified that in this case, pruning or mobilization of trees is always done to interested parties and that the only way to cut their trunks is when they are “very sick.”

Elías Sayegh criticized the criticism received through Twitter against the mobilization of the tree and the alleged “ecocide” to which it would have been subjected. He added that in El Hatillo they are respectful of the environment and that they are constantly working to preserve it by treating tree species, cleaning streams and recycling.
