The Bolivian Episcopal Conference (CEB) released this Sunday, May 21, a statement in which it clarifies that three years ago it began to manage the visit of Cardinal Orani Joao Tempesta, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, and Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu, official of the Department for the Doctrine of the Faith, and that Bertomeu’s arrival in the country was confirmed. It clarifies that it is not a “Vatican commission” that will arrive in Bolivia as has been indicated in the media.
The communiqué says verbatim: “On the occasion of the fraternal visit to the Catholic University of Paraguay of the Cardinal Orani Joao Tempesta, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, and Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu, official of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Bolivian Episcopal Conference has requested the presence of the latter in our country to analyze together in the coming days the progress made so far, in line with the culture of prevention promoted by the Pope Francisco”.
It clarifies that this visit “began to manage three years ago, following the participation of some members of the National Prevention Commission in online courses due to the Covid-19 pandemic”.
He adds: “On this occasion, the reflective meetings that will take place in the coming days will be held in a climate of deep closeness towards all those who have been victims of the scourge of abuse in the Church.
We trust that this initiative can continue in the near future for ua fairer and more effective management of these cases, as well as a better implementation of prevention agencies in our country.
With actions of this type, as a Church in Bolivia, we express once again our firm commitment to justice and to a pastoral care that is attentive to the most vulnerable.May God send us all a good spirit of discernment, so that, enlightened by him, we know how to respond to the difficult situations we are experiencing”.
