At least 14 dead and more than 36,000 displaced are registered in Italy by the worst floods in 100 years. According to a report from RT, This Sunday, May 21, it was reported that the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, canceled the visit she had planned to make to Kazakhstan to return to her country, affected by severe flooding.

The spokesman for the Kazakh president, Ruslan Zheldibay, said that Meloni interrupted his stay in the Japanese city of Hiroshima, where he participated in the G7 summit, earlier than planned, to visit “the places affected by the natural disaster.”

In this way, instead of traveling to Astana, the Italian Prime Minister preferred to have a telephone conversation with the Kazakh president, Kasim-Yomart Tokáyev. The floods affected the north of the country, and Emilia-Romagna is one of the most affected regions.

Heavy rains caused numerous landslides, damaged or closed more than 500 roads, and caused power outages.

For now, the red alert for hydrogeological risk continues, according to the latest official bulletin. The report maintains confirmed fatalities at 14.

According to EFE, Most of the displaced are from the province of Ravenna (19,500), the most affected, while another 4,918 are from Forlì-Cesena and 1,906 from Bologna.

More than 5,300 people continue to be welcomed in Civil Protection facilities, schools and sports centers, while the rest have found alternative accommodation in second homes or houses of relatives or friends, according to the same source.

Likewise, the natural disaster, estimated at “billions of euros” by the regional authorities, has destroyed numerous infrastructures and this Sunday 622 roads remained closed.
