In the film, JLo plays a professional assassin forced to come out of hiding to rescue her daughter, who she had given up for adoption 12 years earlier to protect her from the criminals who were after her. The plot of the film takes viewers to various locations that emulate the Cuban capital, Havana, although the scenes were shot in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
In the film, you can recognize the Malecón and other spaces in Havana, which do correspond to the island’s capital. However, it has not been revealed if these images were filmed specifically for Mother or were taken from some archival source. JLo does not appear in any of them.
According to the magazine Hello, “the scenes that refer to Cuba were filmed in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria”. In this sense, the filmmakers used several locations that simulate the Cuban atmosphere, such as the Gabinete Literario building, San Telmo street, the historic neighborhood of Vegueta and the town of Monte León.
Other emblematic places in Las Palmas that served as the setting for the film include the San Telmo Bandstand, the Town Hall, the Canary Islands Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, the Regental House and the Casa de Colón. These places are recognized for their architecture and vibrant colors, which contribute to the visual representation of Havana on the film.
The cast of Mother, in addition to Jennifer Lopez, includes Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Lucy Páez, Gael García Bernal and Paul Raci. the movie, a thriller American, was directed by filmmaker Niki Caro.
Netflix, the platform that released the film on May 12, began filming in January 2022. At that time, it was announced that a process of transformation of several streets in Las Palmas would be carried out so that they would resemble Havana.
