MIAMI, United States. — Cuban exiles requested this Thursday the release of all political prisoners held in jails on the island during a protest held in front of the regime’s embassy in Washington DC
The protesters warned public opinion of the serious dangers faced by political prisoners and prisoners of conscience and how they are being used by the dictatorship as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the United States government and the European Union.
“Political prisoners continue to be the weakest link. We have received many complaints from January to date that the situation in the prisons has worsened: many of them are being denied medical attention, they are being tortured, ”he told CubaNet Cuban activist Anamely Ramos González, one of those present at the demonstration.
The Cuban historian and curator, expelled from the island since last year, emphasized cases such as those of the rapper Maykel Osorbowho is serving two years in prison today.
Among the protesters was also the pastor Mario Félix Leonard and his wife, also an activist Yoaxis Marcheco.
“In Maykel, who has been in prison for two years, we are thinking of all political prisoners. And we are thinking of all Cubans, because all Cubans on the Island are kidnapped. We raise our voice for all our brothers inside Cuba, but also for ourselves,” Leonard told journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.
Until last April 30, there were 1,048 verified political prisonersaccording to figures released by the non-governmental organization Prisoners Defenders (PD).
The figure does not include the five demonstrators of the protest that took place on May 6 in the Guantanamo municipality of Caimanera, who were violently repressed by members of the Black Berets of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) and who will be tried for the crimes of public disorder. .
