The deputy and vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, commented on his weekly program “Con el Mazo Dando” the decision of Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, to dissolve the Parliament of his country before the imminent political trial that was following him.
Cabello said that this action undertaken by the conservative president would have been possible without the endorsement of the United States. “What Lasso did is authorized by the United States,” said the politician, referring to the ideological dependence of the Ecuadorian government on Washington.
The Ecuadorian president called to apply the “cross death”, the name by which the action of annulling parliamentary functions and calling elections is known. The action was carried out by the president just when he was threatened by a political trial advanced by the National Assembly.
The Ecuadorian parliament and social movements have branded the Executive’s actions as illegal. They have also been rejected by the governments of many countries that view the blow to democracy in the Andean country with concern.
The government in Washington has so far not made a statement, but considers Guillermo Lasso as one of its allies in the region.
