Species of sea grass with anticancer properties will be studied in Cuba

Cuban scientists will take advantage of the anticancer properties of Thalassia testudinumone of the species that make up the island’s seagrasses.

He project It will last four years and will support the completion of scientific research to prepare the application file for a clinical trial of a pharmaceutical product, the Environment Agency (AMA) specified.

Cuban authorities and US experts plan to expand collaboration in studies against cancer

The study has the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA). .

Among the main causes of death in Cuba are cancerous tumors, some 227.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data from the Ministry of Public Health.

In 2022, the island closed with 39 clinical trials against cancer, developed in 22 promoting centers. That same year, it resumed production of some drugs used to treat cancer and other invasive diseases after facing financing problems.
