The San Antonio Spurs got first place in the 2023 Draft of the NBA in which they will predictably choose the French prodigy Victor Wembanyama, according to the draw made this Tuesday.
Wembanyama, a 2.21m tall center with skills never seen in a Draft, He plays for Metropolitans 92 in the French league and is considered the greatest basketball promise since LeBron James was number one in 2003.
The Charlotte Hornets and the Portland Trail Blazers will pick second and third in the Draft, whose ceremony will take place on June 22 in Brooklyn (New York).
“I can’t describe it, my heart is beating. I have all my loved ones around me, it is a very special moment that I will remember for the rest of my life,” Wembanyama said in an interview from Paris on ESPN.
“I’m a team player, I’m going to do everything possible to win as many games as I can. I want to win a ring as soon as possible, so be prepared,” said the 19-year-old center.
The Spurs, a team without any great figure who has been coaching Gregg Popovich for more than two decades, once again takes the number one spot in a Draft that includes a generational talent, as they did when they chose David Robinson in 1997 and Tim Duncan in 1997.
Wembanyama can follow in the footsteps of his compatriot in San Antonio Tony Parker, who won four rings with the Spurs forming a memorable trio with Duncan and the Argentine Emanuel Ginóbili, all of them under the direction of Popovich.
San Antonio was one of three teams that, for having the fewest wins this season, had the best chances of reaching number one, 14%.
The other two franchises that had a 14% chance were the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons, that they will choose in the fourth and fifth place.
