(EFE) Cuba in order to give follow-up and visibility to their cases.
The first “godmother” is Jimena de La Torre, lawyer and advisor to the Magistracy of the Argentine Nation, who attended the presentation of an initiative at the headquarters of the Cuban Historic Prison in Miami that will have a “huge impact on the regime “.
This was stated by the president of UPLA, the Argentine Julián Obligio, who indicated that they have had an “impressive response” from the members of the Women’s Network of that organization to exercise the patronage of Cuban political prisoners.
He also said that the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, privately congratulated him when he informed him of this initiative, which also includes the Miami-based Assembly of the Cuban Resistance.
In the coming weeks, the names of the godmothers will be announced and that all of them “will be women with a voice, as media and with access to public communication”
The 137 political prisoners chosen for the initiative were all imprisoned as a result of the protests of July 2021, which are known as 11J, because the main ones took place on the 11th of that month.
The first to be sought for a godmother to be their “voice” and their protector are: Aimara Nieto, Arianna López Roque, Donaida Pérez Paseiro, Lisandra Góngora Espinosa, María Cristina Garrido Rodríguez and Angélica Garrido Rodríguez.
Obligio said that in the coming weeks the names of the godmothers will be announced and that all of them “will be women with a voice, as media and with access to public communication.”
They are going to be senators, deputies, mayors, governors and others in elective or other positions, who “have a lot of access to the media, who have a lot of visibility.”
The objective is not to let the cases of the 9/11 prisoners fall into oblivion, “let it be seen that they are still imprisoned, that their human rights are violated, that they are mistreated, things that one believes do not happen anymore, but continue to happen in the island”.
The godmothers are going to take care every week to remember that, to denounce and claim whether something happens to them in prison or if there is no information about their situation, he added.
With 137 godmothers the effect is multiplied, stressed Obligio, who said that he would like to see Alberto Fernández, president of Argentina, take a folder of complaints presented by the godmothers in the Argentine Congress or other forums, when he visits Cuba this month.
“It moves me immensely, so of course I accept the responsibility, I accept it with due seriousness”
UPLA believes, he stressed, that “the defense of democracy and freedom in Cuba” cannot be something “inbred” of Cubans.
“The Cuban regime affects the entire continent, we cannot forget about this. So it is important that Argentines, Paraguayans, Uruguayans, Chileans, Bolivians, Colombians, Ecuadorians, Brazilians, we are all united for the Cuban cause and that is what we are doing,” he stressed.
Jimena de la Torre stated that when she was summoned for this initiative, the first thing she thought was that, like her, who has three children, many of the Cuban prisoners are mothers and some also have their husbands in prison, so there are children in prison. Cuba who are being raised by their grandparents with many difficulties.
“It moves me immensely, so of course I accept the responsibility, I accept it with the corresponding seriousness. And that this humble mother and woman has the commitment to carry and be a voice for one of these women until her release,” he stressed.
