Roberto Pacheco, sportscaster for Radio Rebelde, dies

MIAMI, United States. — The narrator and sports commentator Roberto Pacheco, one of the voices of Cuban baseball on the station Rebel Radiopassed away this Monday at the age of 82, reported official media on the island.

“The prominent narrator and sports commentator Roberto Pacheco Martínez passed away this Monday morning in Havana,” he said. Rebel Radio in a note that appeared on his website.

The outlet highlighted Pacheco’s “extensive career” from 1972 to date, a period in which he participated in six Olympic Games, 11 Pan American Games and the same number of Central American and Caribbean Games.

“His voice was present in more than 50 National Baseball Series, as well as in dissimilar international events through the microphones of Cuban Radio,” the note states.

The information highlights that, in more than five decades of profession, Pacheco “received the Distinction for National Culture and the Martyrs of Barbados, the National Radio Award in 2018 and the Abelardo Raidi Award for the Work of Life granted by the Association of Sports Journalists of America, in 2020”.

“The sports newsroom of Radio Rebelde regrets the physical disappearance of this valuable communicator, who marked a milestone in the country’s sports narrative,” the note concludes.

Osvaldo Vento Montiller, president of the Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, an entity with the rank of ministry, lamented the death of Pacheco, whom he described as an “emblematic figure of sports narrative.”

“It hurts to know that Roberto Pacheco passed away. Emblematic figure of sports narrative, Cuban to the core and faithful to Fidel and the Revolution that he always defended. The INDER, which was also his, expresses condolences to family, friends and co-workers, ”said the official on his Twitter account.
