This Tuesday, May 16, will be a non-working holiday for some Uruguayans: see why

This Tuesday May 16 a new holiday nonworking but for some Uruguayans and for the only time.

This is a project that was approved last week by the General Assembly on the occasion of the 140 years of the foundation of Ecilda Paullier, in San José.

The approved regulations consist of a single article, which establishes the following: “Declare a non-working holiday on May 16, 2023 for people born and living in the city of Ecilda Paullier, in the department of San José, on the occasion of celebrating the 140th anniversary of its foundation”.

Is it mandatory to comply with the holiday?

According to the specialist in Labor Law, Leonardo Slinger, it is quite common that when the anniversaries of various locations are fulfilled, for that year, a non-working holiday is decreed for those born and residents of that location. And that that fnon-working holidayeven if it’s just once complies with the same obligations as the rest of the non-working national holidays.

In other words, those born or residents of Ecilda Paullier they may not work and if they work, they must be paid doubleas in the rest of the holidays, explained Slinger in dialogue with The Observer. Those born who live in other locations must prove to the company that they were born there and the company will automatically be obliged to grant them the holiday or pay them double.

In the event that the company does not comply, the employer may go to court to claim double payment.
